Product Description

Turkey Flat Butchers Block Red

Variety 45% Shiraz, 30% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre

The Butchers Block is a traditional Barossa blend made with grapes selected from the Turkey Flat vineyards, including some from the original old vine plantings. It is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre (Mataro), with the proportions of each variety varying from vintage to vintage.

The  growing season was long and mild, escaping the heat spikes associated with some vintages in the Barossa Valley. Two rain events during harvest, extended the growing season for the later ripening Shiraz vineyards as well as the Grenache and Mourvedre. The conditions proved ideal for Shiraz, allowing a great balance between ripe flavours and varietal spice. Grenache and Mourvedre responded to the conditions by producing bright aromatic wines.

The BBR is an aromatic and subtly structured wine with Shiraz providing a backbone of solid tannins and luscious depth of flavour. Grenache provides a dash of spice and cherry sweetness, taming the Shiraz beautifully whilst Mourvedre adds extra layers to the tannins and a little funk and fragrance.

2012 Butchers Block Red - kick some serious value butt

Barossa GSM - When these traditional blends of grenache, shiraz and mourvedre are on song, they kick some serious value butt. Turkey Flat Butchers Block Red 2012 ($20), Kalleske Clarry's GSM 2013 ($20) and Teusner Joshua GMS 2012 ($29) aren't low-cost wines, but they reek of authenticity and quality. If they were more on trend, they'd be asking double their prices.

2012 Butchers Block Red - silky & effortless

Wine of the week
Has to be one of the best-value blends on the market. And this one is a cracker because it comes from the outstanding 2012 vintage - a blessed relief after the challenges of the previous year. It's a mix of shiraz, grenache and mourvedre with oak playing an understated role to add a subtle degree of complexity. It's generous and supple with a smooth mouth feel and flavour displaying stacks of ripe plummy spicy fruit characters. Silky and effortless with a long palate crammed with goodies. 94/100

2012 Butchers Block Red - particularly seductive
Butchers Block combines the three classic Barossa red varieties, shiraz (45 per cent), grenache (30 per cent) and mourvèdre (25 per cent). Mark Bulman's light hand in the winery unleashed the ripe and gentle beauty of these varieties in an excellent Barossa vintage. The high-toned aroma reveals the vitality of the fruit - the musk-like grenache being particularly seductive. The palate is all fleshy, juicy, vibrant fruit flavour cut through with fine, gentle tannins.

2012 Butchers Block Red - hums along deliciously
Traditional blend of shiraz, grenache and mourvedre. A good pointer to the quality of the 2012 Barossan vintage it is too. This hums along deliciously. It’s terrific value. It blends deep, dark, meaty black berried fruit with leathery, earthen notes quite beautifully. It’s jubey and licoricey, has a good cut of tannin. and is alive with well-ripened flavour from start to finish. You could hardly ask for more. It’s a really good Butchers Block red from the team at Turkey Flat
