Drift Pinot Noir

Region Omaka and Waihopai Valleys, Marlborough, NZ

Vintage 2012

DRIFT Pinot Noir is a luscious medium-bodied wine with a soft rounded palate, well balanced acidity, supple tannins and lingering fruit flavours. Blackberry and boysenberry dominate the palate and are complimented by hints of raspberry and redcurrant and rich savoury notes.

DRIFT Pinot Noir is ready to drink on release however this elegant wine will develop well in the bottle with careful cellaring up to five years.

The Vineyard
The breathtaking Omaka and Waihopai Valleys with their rich clay soils, ample sunshine, cool nights and low autumn rains are well suited to producing fruit with excellent colour and supple tannins. The vineyards are kept to low yields to ensure full flavoured fruit and the cooler climate is ideal for the crafting of elegant Pinot Noir.

The Winemaking
The parcels of Pinot Noir were harvested at optimum ripeness in the cool of the evening. The fruit was then chilled for 4-5 days prior to ferment to help extract maximum flavour and to enhance colour stability. A variety of yeasts were used for the fermentation process, during which the must was hand plunged up to six times daily. At the completion of fermentation, a portion of the wine was pressed to stainless steel tanks, and a smaller portion to new and used French oak. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation and was matured for 8 months in barrel before being blended and prepared for bottling.
