Ara is a single vineyard estate that lies at the confluence of the Wairau and Waihopai rivers in the renowned Marlborough wine region of New Zealand.  We embrace the best of old world viticultural practices with new world innovation in our journey to create a new generation of wine.

Our Marlborough range of wines are sourced exclusively from within the ARA vineyard.  They have been crafted to capture the perfect balance between the renowned Marlborough fruit exuberance and a more complete and elegant wine style.

This Ara Single Vineyard Pinot Noir has been crafted from the typical low yielding vines at ARA, which deliver a complex savoury structure with soft tannins. The younger vines provide the accentuated fruit aromatics of typical intense Marlborough strawberry and ripe cherry characters. The 2009 grape harvest which started in the fourth week in march to third week in April, was a combination of machine and hand picking.  The blend of early and later picks contributed to the fusion of primary fruit and savoury aromas.  Fruit was destemmed but not crushed and transferred to gravity tank for 5-7 days, cold soaked and -8deg celsius followed by fermentation and skin contact for 10-15 days.  Fermentation temperatures peaked between -28 and -32 degC.  Malolactic Fermentation was started in the tank and to retain the primary fruit characters a portion of the blend was kept in tank.  The balance of the blend undertook fermentation in oak which consisted of 10% and 90%older fine grained French  barrels for 6 months.
