Varietal History Sangiovese is still today the most planted red grape variety in Italy. It is thought that the variety was first cultivated in Tuscany during Roman times with Tuscans still being the number one producers of the variety. Sangiovese is known to produce medium bodied red wines of great texture though they are generally somewhat light in colour compared to that of mainstream red varieties.
